The first investment opportunities in green hydrogen production projects are announced.

The Sultanate of Oman National Strategy of Regulated Transition to Net Zero and  the Energy National Environmental policy are launched through the pavilion of Sultanate of Oman participating at Sharm Al Sheikh

Assigned by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said, H.E. Salim bin Nasser Al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, chaired the Sultanate of Oman delegation to the Arab Republic of Egypt, to participate at the 27th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 27) at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 2022, held in Sharm El Sheikh from 6 to 18 November.  

HE. Salim Al Aufi was accompanied by HE Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali Al Harthy Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry for Diplomatic Affairs,  HE.  Dr. Abdullah Bin Ali Al Amri Chairman of Environment authority, H.E.Eng Naif Ali Al Abri, Chairman of Oman's Civil Aviation and HE.  Abdullah bin Nasser Al Rahbi, the Sultanate's ambassador to Egypt.

During the opening ceremony, HE Salim Al Aufi stated: "the Sultanate of Oman is joining the world in this significant event, to unify the efforts in reducing global warming to less than 2 Celsius degree, and if possible set 1,5 Celsius as maximum increasing degree from the pre industry levels, as stipulated in Paris agreement, which was signed by 196 countries and came into effect on 4th November 2016",   

"The world aims to reach the peak of GHG reductions, as early as possible in order to achieve the net zero by mid of the century. Many countries around the world have pledged to provide the nationally determined contributions, to ensure the energy transition and reduce emissions"

HE Al Aufi added: "we took important steps to lower carbon emissions after the Sultanate of Oman announcing the year 2050 to achieve the net zero, and establishing Oman Sustainability Centre based on the outputs of the Carbon Management Laboratory. In order to continue our efforts, we are delighted to announce the Sultanate of Oman National Strategy of the Regulated Transition to Net Zero Plan, and announce the National Environmental Energy Policy".

"We are pleased to announce today the pre-qualification of investors interested to participate in the first round of the green hydrogen production through Oman Hydrogen Company Hydrom " HE. Al Aufi added.

The opening ceremony included a speech by Dr. Alok Sharma as the COP26 session President, and handed the presidency of COP27 session to Egyptian Foreign Minister  HE. Sameh Shoukry President-designate of UN Climate Change Conference 2022, followed by a speech delivered by the current president of COP27. The Conference will include a number of high-level round table discussions.

The conference comes as part of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is an international treaty signed by most of the world countries, aiming to reduce the impact of the human activities on climate. The signed countries have pledged to attend the COP in order to agree on increasing the reduction rate of of GHG and Carbon emissions, in line with reducing the planet temperatures into less than 2 Celsius degree. 

The conference aimed to mitigate, finance and cooperate in mitigation of the earth’s  warming to just below two degrees Celsius and to seriously work on maintaining the target of 1.5 degree Celsius, which requires fast actions that contribute to achieve the aspiration of all parties and to establish a work programme on mitigation and to adapt to the changing climate conditions including heat waves, floods and forest fires.
